About Me

I’m a creative professional, who specializes in UX design education and in the role of UX architect for enterprise level design projects.

I love design. Photoshop has always been my program of choice, although I can find my way around any design program. I know prototyping and I teach it with a variety of tools. I'm a mentor to my students and I enjoy coaching them in the disciplines of UX Design and helping them get excited about the field, its potential, and its future.

I understand the design process and it's methods. I know how to work well with stakeholders, striking the balance in delivering products that meet both user and business goals. Most importantly, I understand the ever present need for solid user-centered design so customers can love their products and businesses can be successful.

1999

I graduated with an A.A.S. in Technical Communications in 1999. First job out of the gate was a graphic design position for an exhibit design company in Houston, working on a permanent exhibit for Space Center Houston.

In 2000, I worked for a small wireless start-up doing graphic design collateral materials and jumping head first into web design.

In 2001, I landed a job in the marketing department of a large credit union in Houston, designing all marketing materials. Six months later I redesigned their website.

2004

In 2004, I decided to freelance full-time with a business colleague, producing graphic and web design services for a myriad of small businesses.

Concurrently, I moved to Austin to continue freelancing which eventually turned into a two man shop. Business management and design production was performed by me and my partner handled the web development. I also began teaching as an adjunct instructor at Austin Community College in the Web and Interactive Design degree.

2007

In 2007, I landed a full-time job at USAA in San Antonio in their design world as a UI Producer which transitioned to the role of UX Architect.

Over the next five years I learned on the job, building a foundation of UX design experience before it blew sky high in the industry. I moved around within the design arena at USAA which included project delivery environment, enterprise design, and web standards.

2012-Present

In 2012, I returned to education and secured a full-time position at Austin Community College in the Visual Communications department teaching the Web and Interactive Design degree. Over the next five years, my colleague and I worked to transform the A.A.S. degree into the User Experience Design degree that it is today. We introduced version 1.0 about two and a half years ago and have successfully graduated our first class under the new degree. Those students landed internships or hired on with great companies here in the Austin area.

Marc’s enthusiasm for the UX Design course was really contagious…

Marc presents the course material clearly, backed up with examples that are designed to show the key points of the concept. His lecture talks flow well and his methods of teaching are well thought out and given at a level that the students can understand. Marc’s enthusiasm for the UX Design course was really contagious and he made it really interesting and easy to understand. In short, he is very passionate, enthusiastic and engaging.

UX Student, Austin Community College

He helped to found the first UX Design Associates Degree program in the USA…

I’ve seen Marc make the transition from graphic design to web technologies, as both designer and product manager, adapting his skills to join the UX team (at USAA) to work on consumer facing apps. And now as a college instructor, he helped to found the first User Experience Design Associates Degree program in the USA.

My books’ cover art has received universal praise from readers…

Marc Bonasso designed covers for all four of the books I self-published. He worked diligently with me to fully realize the mostly vague concepts I had floating around in my head. He was prompt in sending me proofs and flexible in making alterations based on my feedback. My books’ cover art has received universal praise from readers and that is all due to Marc’s artistic vision and keen sense of design. He is the only graphic designer I will use for any of my media needs.
